North Canterbury Information
Island Farm is just a 5 minute drive northeast of Christchurch airport. David Shipley has been farming the land for the past 40 years, although the property has been in the Shipley family since 1914. David farms Corriedale sheep for their meat and wool, finishing steers for their beef, and angora goats for their mohair and weed controlling properties. On Sunday, 13 March David Shipley will be opening his farm gates to give North Canterbury visitors a unique opportunity to experience what takes place on his Christchurch farm. Visitors will see sheep shearing demonstrations, will learn the difference between lambs, ewes and hoggets, and will get up close to beef cattle and angora goats. Visitors will gain insight into how wetland areas on the property are restored, and will learn about the stream life that inhabits the waterways dissecting the farm.
